Harvester Ants in Phoenix, AZ

Pogonomyrmex spp.

Harvester ants deliver one of the most painful stings of any U.S. insect. See how to identify their mounds and get them treated safely.

Notes: From a Phoenix, AZ Exterminator

Appearance

Harvester ants are large — up to half an inch — and reddish-brown to black, with a distinctive fringe of hairs (psammophore) under the head used for carrying seeds. Their mounds are cleared of vegetation in a wide circle, often ringed with small gravel and seed husks.

Harborage

These ants prefer open, sunny, sparsely vegetated ground — exactly what much of West Valley desert landscaping offers. Mounds can extend several feet underground with extensive tunnel systems.

Are They Dangerous?

Yes — harvester ants deliver one of the most painful stings of any insect in the U.S., and their venom can trigger serious allergic reactions. Because they're slower-moving than fire ants, encounters often happen when someone steps directly on a mound.

Treatment

Because colonies run deep and can persist for years, effective control requires direct treatment of the nest structure. Antidote Pest Solutions locates and treats harvester ant mounds before they become a stepping hazard. Talk to one of Antidote Pest's Service Pro's today.

Prevention Tips

Keep an eye out for cleared, crater-like mounds in open, sunny areas of the yard

Avoid walking barefoot near known mounds, since their sting is notably painful

Remove seed-producing weeds near the home that attract foraging colonies

Seal cracks in patios, walkways, and foundations where satellite nests can start

Keep children and pets away from active mounds

Behavioral Notes

Harvester ant stings are ranked among the most painful of any U.S. insect on entomologist Justin Schmidt's sting pain index, described as causing pain that can last up to eight hours.

Colonies clear all vegetation in a wide circle around the nest entrance, creating the bare, crater-like mounds that make them easy to spot in yards and open desert.

Teri T.

“I had ants in my home and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I tried store bought poisons and traps and nothing worked. These guys came in and within one day, not a single ant to be found. It's been several weeks now. So thrilled to have found them when I did, especially since the weather is changing and stirring up all kinds of creepy crawlies. Thank you!!"
