Notes: From a Phoenix, AZ Exterminator
Appearance
Paper wasps are slender with long legs that dangle in flight, colored brown with yellow or reddish markings. They measure about 3/4 to 1 inch long.

Harborage
They build open, umbrella-shaped paper nests with visible hexagonal cells, typically hanging under patio covers, eaves, and porch ceilings — highly common on West Valley homes with covered patios.
Are They Dangerous?
They can sting repeatedly when their nest is threatened, causing pain, swelling, and in some people, an allergic reaction requiring medical attention. They're generally not aggressive unless provoked or the nest is disturbed.
Treatment
Removing a nest yourself risks multiple stings if the colony is disturbed. Antidote Pest Solutions safely removes nests and treats problem areas to prevent rebuilding. Talk to one of Antidote Pest's Service Pro's before nesting season ramps up.
Prevention Tips
Inspect eaves, patio covers, and porch ceilings in early spring for new nests
Remove old nests once wasps are gone for the season to discourage reuse of the site
Seal gaps in eaves, attic vents, and soffits
Keep sugary drinks and food covered during outdoor gatherings
Trim vegetation away from patios and entryways
Behavioral Notes
Paper wasp nests are built from wood fiber the wasps scrape and chew into a paper-like pulp — the visible hexagonal cells are essentially handmade paper construction.
A paper wasp colony is founded by a single overwintering queen each spring, meaning even a nest with dozens of wasps by summer traces back to one insect just months earlier.
