Arizona Brown Spiders in Phoenix, AZ

Loxosceles arizonica

Often mistaken for the brown recluse, Arizona brown spiders bite and hide indoors. See how to spot them and how we treat for them.

Notes: From a Phoenix, AZ Exterminator

Appearance

Arizona brown spiders are light tan to brown, about a half-inch to an inch long, with long thin legs and a violin-shaped marking on the top of the cephalothorax — the same recluse family marking associated with the brown recluse spider. A key ID trait: six eyes, arranged in pairs, instead of the usual eight.

Harborage

These spiders prefer dark, undisturbed areas — closets, garages, storage boxes, behind furniture, and clothing left on the floor. They're shy and avoid contact, which is often how bites happen: unintentional contact while dressing or reaching into storage.

Are They Dangerous?

Their bite can cause localized redness, swelling, and in some cases a slow-healing wound. While rarely as severe as commonly feared, any bite that worsens or doesn't heal should be evaluated by a doctor.

Treatment

Because they hide in clutter and rarely build visible webs, control starts with reducing hiding spots and applying targeted treatment. Antidote Pest Solutions inspects storage areas, closets, and voids other companies skip. Talk to one of our Antidote Pest Service Pro's to get help clearing them out.

Prevention Tips

Reduce clutter in garages, sheds, and closets where they like to hide

Shake out stored boxes, shoes, and clothing before handling them

Seal cracks and gaps around baseboards, window frames, and vents

Move firewood and debris piles away from the foundation

Use a vacuum with a crevice tool to check behind furniture and in corners regularly

Install door sweeps to limit entry points at ground level

Behavioral Notes

Unlike many spiders, Arizona brown spiders actively hunt rather than waiting in a web — they leave their loose, irregular webbing mainly as a retreat.

Their bite can go completely unnoticed for hours, since the venom is not immediately painful; symptoms often develop well after the bite occurred.

“I had ants in my home and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I tried store bought poisons and traps and nothing worked. These guys came in and within one day, not a single ant to be found. It's been several weeks now. So thrilled to have found them when I did, especially since the weather is changing and stirring up all kinds of creepy crawlies. Thank you!!"
