Black Widow Spiders in Phoenix, AZ

Latrodectus hesperus

Black widow spiders are common in West Valley garages and woodpiles. Learn how to identify them and get them removed safely.

Notes: From a Phoenix, AZ Exterminator

Appearance

Female black widows are shiny, jet-black, and about 1.5 inches long including their legs, with the telltale red hourglass marking on the underside of a bulbous abdomen. Males are smaller, lighter in color, and rarely encountered.

Harborage

Black widows build irregular, tangled webs low to the ground in undisturbed spots — woodpiles, garages, storage sheds, meter boxes, and under patio furniture are common hiding spots across Avondale and the West Valley.

Are They Dangerous?

Yes. Female black widow venom is a neurotoxin that can cause intense pain, muscle cramping, sweating, and nausea. Bites are rarely fatal in healthy adults but always warrant medical attention, especially for children or those with health conditions.

Treatment

Because black widows hide in cracks, clutter, and hard-to-reach voids, DIY treatments often miss the source. Antidote Pest Solutions removes webs and egg sacs and applies targeted treatments to reduce populations at the root.Talk to one of Antidote Pest's Service Pro's to spider-proof your property.

Prevention Tips

Wear gloves when moving woodpiles, storage boxes, or garden debris

Reduce clutter in garages, sheds, and under patio furniture

Knock down webs regularly with a broom, especially in corners and meter boxes

Seal gaps around utility penetrations, meter boxes, and vents

Keep firewood stacked away from the house and off the ground

Shake out shoes, gloves, and stored items before use

Behavioral Notes

Female black widows sometimes eat the male after mating — but it's rarer in the wild than in popular myth, and males will often escape before it happens.

Black widow silk is, pound for pound, among the strongest of any spider — their tangled 'cobwebs' are structurally engineered to trap prey many times the spider's own size.

“I had ants in my home and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I tried store bought poisons and traps and nothing worked. These guys came in and within one day, not a single ant to be found. It's been several weeks now. So thrilled to have found them when I did, especially since the weather is changing and stirring up all kinds of creepy crawlies. Thank you!!"
