Pharaoh Ants in Phoenix, AZ

Monomorium pharaonis

Pharaoh ants are tiny, fast-breeding, and notoriously hard to eliminate with store-bought sprays. Learn why — and what actually works.

Notes: From a Phoenix, AZ Exterminator

Appearance

Pharaoh ants are extremely small — about 1/16 inch — and light yellow to reddish, with a darker abdomen. Their tiny size lets them squeeze through nearly any gap or seal.

Harborage

These ants nest in warm, hard-to-reach voids — behind baseboards, inside wall cavities, and near water heaters — and they're notorious for infesting hospitals and multi-unit buildings due to how easily colonies split and relocate.

Are They Dangerous?

They don't sting, but pharaoh ants are known to contaminate food and, in medical settings, have been linked to spreading bacteria. In homes, they're primarily a persistent nuisance.

Treatment

This is one species where DIY sprays actively make things worse — disturbing the colony causes it to "bud" into several new colonies. Antidote Pest Solutions uses bait-based strategies designed specifically to avoid triggering budding. Talk to one of Antidote Pest's Service Pro's before the problem multiplies.

Prevention Tips

Store food, especially sweets and proteins, in sealed containers

Fix leaks and reduce moisture sources indoors

Seal cracks around cabinets, baseboards, and outlets

Avoid using repellent sprays on trails, which can cause colonies to 'bud' and spread

Keep bathrooms and kitchens free of food debris and standing water

Behavioral Notes

Pharaoh ant colonies can have hundreds of queens at once, and the colony will split ('bud') into multiple new nests when it senses a threat — a big reason DIY sprays often backfire and multiply an infestation.

They're notorious for infesting hospitals, where they're drawn to IV fluids and have even been documented entering sealed wound dressings and sterile equipment packaging.

Teri T.

“I had ants in my home and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I tried store bought poisons and traps and nothing worked. These guys came in and within one day, not a single ant to be found. It's been several weeks now. So thrilled to have found them when I did, especially since the weather is changing and stirring up all kinds of creepy crawlies. Thank you!!"
