Red Imported Fire Ants in Phoenix, AZ

Solenopsis invicta

Fire ants build aggressive mounds and deliver painful stings. Learn how to identify them and how Antidote Pest Solutions treats colonies.

Notes: From a Phoenix, AZ Exterminator

Appearance

Red imported fire ants are reddish-brown with a darker abdomen, measuring 1/8 to 3/8 inch — with noticeably varied sizes within the same colony. Their mounds are loose, dome-shaped dirt piles with no visible entry hole, often appearing after irrigation or monsoon rain.

Harborage

Fire ants build mounds in open lawns, along sidewalks, near irrigation lines, and in landscaped beds. Colonies can house hundreds of thousands of ants and will aggressively defend their mound the instant it's disturbed.

Are They Dangerous?

Yes. Fire ants swarm in seconds when their mound is disturbed and deliver repeated, painful stings that cause burning, itchy welts — and in sensitive individuals, a serious allergic reaction requiring medical care.

Treatment

Surface treatments often just split a colony into satellite nests. Antidote Pest Solutions uses colony-elimination methods that target the queen, not just visible workers. Talk to one of Antidote Pest's Service Pro's before kids or pets find the mound first.

Prevention Tips

Watch for soft, dome-shaped mounds after rain or irrigation, especially in lawns

Avoid disturbing mounds directly — colonies will attack en masse if the nest is threatened

Keep children and pets away from known mound locations

Treat mounds with an appropriate method rather than DIY methods that can cause colonies to split

Seal cracks in patios, sidewalks, and foundations where satellite colonies can form

Behavioral Notes

Fire ants can link their bodies together to form living rafts, allowing entire colonies to survive floods by floating on the water surface for days at a time.

Each fire ant sting delivers alkaloid venom that causes the sting's telltale white pustule, and a single ant can sting repeatedly since it doesn't lose its stinger like a honeybee.

Teri T.

“I had ants in my home and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I tried store bought poisons and traps and nothing worked. These guys came in and within one day, not a single ant to be found. It's been several weeks now. So thrilled to have found them when I did, especially since the weather is changing and stirring up all kinds of creepy crawlies. Thank you!!"
