Turkestan Cockroaches in Phoenix, AZ

Blatta lateralis

Turkestan cockroaches have largely replaced Oriental roaches outdoors in Arizona. Learn how to identify and treat them.

Notes: From a Phoenix, AZ Exterminator

Appearance

Turkestan cockroach males are tan with pale wing edges; females are darker reddish-brown with much shorter, non-functional wings. Both are roughly an inch long.

Harborage

This species has rapidly become the dominant outdoor roach across the Phoenix metro, thriving in water meter boxes, block wall voids, potted plants, and irrigation valve boxes — venturing indoors when populations peak.

Are They Dangerous?

Like other roach species, they spread bacteria and allergens, and large outdoor populations mean a steady stream of roaches finding their way indoors through the smallest gaps.

Treatment

Because they thrive in irrigation and utility boxes around the yard, outdoor perimeter treatment is essential. Antidote Pest Solutions targets these hot spots directly to cut down indoor sightings. Talk to one of Antidote Pest's Service Pro's today.

Prevention Tips

Seal cracks around irrigation boxes, meter boxes, and exterior utility penetrations

Remove leaf litter, mulch, and debris from garden beds and planters

Keep exterior lighting to a minimum or use yellow bug lights

Fix leaks and eliminate outdoor standing water

Seal gaps around block wall weep holes and expansion joints

Behavioral Notes

Turkestan cockroaches have largely displaced the once-common oriental cockroach in outdoor Southwest landscapes since being introduced to the U.S. in the 1970s-80s, likely via military cargo.

Males are strong fliers and are frequently drawn to porch and pool lights at night, while females are flightless and rarely stray far from moist harborage like irrigation boxes.

Teri T.

“I had ants in my home and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I tried store bought poisons and traps and nothing worked. These guys came in and within one day, not a single ant to be found. It's been several weeks now. So thrilled to have found them when I did, especially since the weather is changing and stirring up all kinds of creepy crawlies. Thank you!!"
