Cockroaches, Cross-Contamination, and Why One Roach Problem Can Become Your Neighbor's Problem Too

Cockroaches have a reputation problem, and it's earned. But most homeowners underestimate exactly how they spread, what they leave behind, and how much of what they "know" about roaches is actually myth.
Cockroach biology that makes them such tough survivors
The two species we see most in West Valley homes are the German cockroach (small, tan, found mostly in kitchens and bathrooms) and the American cockroach (larger, reddish-brown, more common in garages, sewers, and outdoor harborage). Their biology explains a lot about why they're so hard to eliminate with half-measures:
Reproductive speed. A single female German cockroach can produce 30–40 eggs per egg case (called an ootheca) and generate several egg cases in her lifetime meaning one female can be the source of hundreds of offspring within a few months.
They're built to survive extremes. Cockroaches can survive on a scent-sized amount of food, live for weeks without eating, and go about a week without water. Some species can survive short periods without a head due to their decentralized nervous system and open circulatory system, which is part of where their "indestructible" reputation comes from.
They're nocturnal and photophobic. Cockroaches actively avoid light, which is why flipping on a kitchen light and seeing roaches scatter usually means a much larger population is hiding in the walls, under appliances, or behind baseboards than what you actually saw.
They communicate via pheromones, leaving chemical trails in droppings that guide other roaches to food and harborage sites. This is the reason an infestation tends to concentrate in the same few areas of a home.
How infestations cross from home to home
In West Valley neighborhoods with shared walls, tight lot spacing, or older irrigation and sewer lines, cockroaches move more easily between properties than most people realize. Common crossover points include:
Shared plumbing and sewer lines. German cockroaches especially can travel through plumbing chases and gaps around pipe penetrations.
Attached garages and shared fence lines. American and Oriental roaches move along block walls, through weep holes, and via shared landscaping.
Secondhand appliances and boxes, moving in a used refrigerator, stove, or stack of storage boxes from an infested source is a classic transfer point.
HOA-dense communities — when one home in a row has a heavy infestation, neighbors on either side are at meaningfully higher risk, even without direct contact.
This is why we treat cockroach jobs differently than a lot of other pests since the source is often next door or coming through a shared structural gap, so a single-home treatment can miss it entirely.
The health side most people don't think about
Roaches carry real health risks beyond the unsettling factor of seeing one:
They shed skin and leave droppings that are a well-documented asthma and allergy trigger, especially in kids.
They mechanically carry bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli on their legs and bodies as they move from drains, trash, and sewage into kitchens and food prep areas.
Heavy infestations have been linked to increased allergic sensitization in homes with long-term exposure.
Common myths worth clearing up
"A clean kitchen means no roaches." Cleanliness helps reduce food sources, but it doesn't stop roaches from entering through plumbing, shared walls, or cardboard boxes. Even spotless homes get infestations if there's an entry point and a water source nearby.
"If I see one roach, it's probably just one roach." Roaches are highly social and gather where pheromone trails lead. Seeing one especially during the day almost always signals a larger hidden population.
"Roaches can survive a nuclear apocalypse." This one's exaggerated. Cockroaches are more radiation-resistant than humans, largely because of their slower cell division cycle, but they are not immune to it, and this myth has little to do with what actually makes them hard to eliminate around a house (their reproduction rate and hiding ability).
"Store-bought sprays and foggers solve the problem." Foggers often scatter roaches deeper into wall voids rather than eliminate them, and they don't reach egg cases tucked into cracks. This is a major reason DIY treatments frequently make an infestation look "gone" for a few weeks before it resurfaces.
Conditions that invite them in (and keep them here)
Standing water, leaky sink traps, AC condensate lines, and over-watered planters
Cardboard and paper clutter in garages
Pet food left out overnight
Gaps around plumbing penetrations under sinks
What actually works
Sprays alone rarely solve an established infestation, they just scatter the colony deeper into the walls. A proper treatment targets harborage areas, uses baiting where it counts, and seals the entry points that let reinfestation happen. If you share a wall, a fence line, or a stretch of block wall with a neighbor who has an active problem, it's worth getting ahead of it before it becomes your problem too.
