Scorpions in the West Valley: Behavior, Conducive Conditions, and How Easily They Get In

Scorpion biology 101
The Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus) is the species behind the vast majority of West Valley encounters, and it's the most medically significant scorpion in the U.S. A few biological facts that shape how they behave around a home:
They're arachnids, not insects. Closer relatives of spiders and ticks than of beetles or roaches, with the same eight legs and two body segments.
They glow under UV light. Their exoskeleton contains fluorescent compounds that make them visible under a blacklight at night, which is why pest professionals often do nighttime UV inspections to find them on walls, ceilings, and in yards.
They can survive on very little. Scorpions have a remarkably slow metabolism and can go months between meals if necessary, which is part of why a home with even modest insect activity can sustain a scorpion population.
Females give live birth, not eggs, and the young ride on the mother's back for their first one to two weeks of life meaning a single pregnant female found indoors can represent a whole cluster arriving at once.
They're most active at temperatures between roughly 75–95°F, which lines up almost exactly with West Valley evenings from spring through monsoon season — the period we see the sharpest jump in service calls.
Behavior: how they actually move and hide
They're nocturnal. Scorpions hide during the day and hunt at night, which is why most sightings happen after dark on patios, in garages, or scurrying across tile floors.
They're climbers. Bark scorpions are one of the few scorpion species that regularly climb stucco, block walls, tree bark, and even smooth vertical surfaces. This is a big part why they end up on ceilings and in second-story rooms, unlike most ground-dwelling scorpion species.
They're chasing moisture and prey. Scorpions come inside hunting water and food, specifically the insects and spiders that are already living off your home's moisture and light sources. If you have bugs, you're more likely to have scorpions.
They can go dormant for long stretches. In cooler months they retreat and slow down, then become active again as temperatures rise.
Common myths about scorpions in Arizona
"Scorpion stings are usually deadly." For most healthy adults, a bark scorpion sting causes intense pain, numbness, and tingling near the sting site, similar to a severe bee sting, and resolves within a day or two. Small children, older adults, and anyone with a severe reaction should seek medical attention, but fatalities are rare with proper care.
"Baby scorpions are more dangerous than adults." This is a persistent myth with no real basis. Venom potency doesn't work that way in scorpions, and a bark scorpion's sting is roughly comparable in severity across its life stages.
"They only live out in the desert, not in neighborhoods." Bark scorpions thrive in developed residential areas precisely because block walls, rock landscaping, and irrigation create ideal habitat (arguably better habitat than raw desert in some cases.)
"Scorpions are aggressive and will chase you." Scorpions are ambush predators that prefer to avoid confrontation. Stings almost always happen from accidental contact such as a hand reaching into a shoe, a foot stepping near a rock pile... not pursuit.
"Freezing them or vinegar sprays get rid of them for good." Home remedies like this might kill or repel an individual scorpion on contact, but they do nothing about a conducive property or existing entry points, so new scorpions keep arriving.
Conducive conditions: What's actually inviting them onto your property
Certain yard and home conditions make a property genuinely more attractive to scorpions:
Rock landscaping and decorative rock beds — a scorpion's natural habitat, recreated in your front yard
Wood piles, palm fronds, and yard debris — prime daytime hiding spots
Block walls with weep holes — a direct highway from the yard into wall voids
Overhanging tree branches and shrubs touching the house — natural bridges onto the roofline
Outdoor lighting left on at night — attracts the insects scorpions feed on, which in turn attracts the scorpions
Standing water — leaky hose bibs, pet water bowls, and AC units that drip
How easily they actually get inside
This is the part that surprises most homeowners: a bark scorpion can fit through a gap about the width of a credit card's edge. Common entry points we find on West Valley homes include:
Gaps around weep holes in block walls
Unsealed expansion joints where the foundation meets the slab
Gaps around plumbing and utility penetrations
Loose or damaged weatherstripping under doors
Unscreened attic vents and roof-line gaps
Gaps around windows, especially older or settled homes
Because they can climb, a full exterior inspection has to check the roofline and wall junctions in addition to ground-level gaps.
Reducing risk around your home
Move woodpiles, rock decor, and debris away from the foundation
Trim back branches and shrubs touching the exterior walls
Fix leaks and drips promptly. Less moisture means fewer insects, means fewer scorpions
Use yellow "bug" bulbs for outdoor lighting instead of white light
Have weep holes and foundation gaps professionally sealed
Scorpions are one of the more manageable pests to control once conducive conditions are addressed and entry points are sealed, but DIY sprays rarely reach where they're actually hiding. A property inspection covering rooflines, wall voids, and the yard is what actually fixes the problem.
